Fred is a Postdoctoral researcher working on the CD-Hist project

Current position

Fred Pailler is a Postdoctoral researcher working on the CD-Hist project, funded by the FNR. His interest in the 80s/90s networks and computing cultures is one of the many reasons why he joins the CD-hist project in December 2024 as a post-doctoral researcher. He will investigate domestic reception of CD-ROMs, from video games to shareware, digital encyclopedias, educational CD-ROMs, and Internet access kits.

Research

His research focuses primarily on infrastructures and uses of digital social platforms, and related labor, health, gender, and sexuality controversies in digital context. His doctoral dissertation addressed the way sexual and sentimental cultures articulate with digital technologies, from the French ‘Minitel rose’ in the 80s/90s to the major platforms of web 2.0, with a focus on visual semiotics and content circulations.

Work experience

Fred Pailler has an extensive experience in conducting combined ethnographies, surveys and computer assisted content analysis.

Educational background

Fred Pailler holds a PhD in media studies (University of Nantes, FR, 2019) and has a background training in sociology and ethnography.
