Joé Voncken is a PhD researcher at the Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH) in Luxembourg and has started working on the WW2LUX project in January 2022. His current research project consists of analysing the role of local authorities in Luxembourg during the Second World War, while also taking into account the transitory periods before and after.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in History and German Literature from the University of Bamberg as well as a master’s degree in Contemporary History from the University of Leipzig. During the latter he focused on the depiction of the state of Belgium in German historiography, namely covering the period between 1846 and 1914. Public history, historiography and perception of history remain essential parts of his research interests, while recent developments in the field of modern historical research on Luxembourg in WW2 have inspired him to delve into a PhD at C²DH as part of the WW2LUX project under the supervision of Christoph Brüll and Denis Scuto.
