Wartime regimes are more than simple top-down structures of terror and coercion between the occupier and the occupied or between the warring state and its population. Existing administrations, networks and functional elites took on complex roles, often adapting to local circumstances. Administrative authorities and personnel were constantly interacting with the population regarding everyday affairs. Studying the responses of administrations to the World Wars could enrich our understanding of contemporary history.

Who were the Luxembourgish legionnaires? What were they doing in France? Why did they decide to enrol? How were they portrayed and remembered?

The exhibition « Légionnaires » is the outcome of a collaboration between the C²DH and the Musée Dräi Eechelen, bringing together the results of a quinquennial investigation on the Luxembourgers in the French Foreign Legion.

Die Fortsetzung des interdisziplinären Seminars „Russia and Luxembourg in the 20th century: crossroads of history“ fand an der Universität Tambow (Russland) vom 11. bis 15. Februar 2019 statt, bei der russische und Luxemburger Studierende in Referaten und Diskussionen Schlüsselereignisse der Geschichte der beiden Länder untersucht haben.

Le 11 novembre 2018 a eu lieu la commémoration du centenaire de l’armistice qui a mis fin à la Première Guerre mondiale. Quelle mémoire garde-t-on aujourd’hui des événements, des victimes et des traumatismes d’une guerre qui a ravagé l’Europe de 1914 à 1918 ? De quoi se souvient-on et qu’est ce qui a été réprimé et perdu ?

How do we look back on the Great War today, a century after the events unfolded? What do we remember of that time? What has been handed down to us of the conflicts and traumas that took place? What memories are conserved by objects, places and commemorative practices? And what stories have been deliberately sidelined or simply lost?

The C²DH’s digital exhibition about the Great War in Luxembourg was officially launched on 19 April 2018 at a press conference attended by Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and the Rector of the University of Luxembourg, Stéphane Pallage.

The virtual exhibition developed by the C²DH retraces key aspects of the history and memory of the First World War in Luxembourg.

L'exposition «Être d’ailleurs en temps de guerre (14-18). Étrangers à Dudelange / Dudelangeois à l’étranger» est une réalisation conjointe du Centre de Documentation sur les Migrations Humaines (CDMH) et du Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH). Elle est ouverte au public du 29 mars au 9 décembre 2018 dans les locaux du CDMH à Gare-Usines, Dudelange et accompagnée par un programme d'événements et de conférences.
