The “Liewen am Minett” project came to life by an initiative of the Minister of Culture Robert Krieps in 1986. In the photo book’s foreword he stated that the heart of Luxembourg’s industry, “the cradle of its prosperity and the material support of national independence” – the Minett – has been unfairly overlooked, and its “new type of man” – the Minettsdäpp – largely unseen. “It is therefore a kind of injustice,” Krieps continued, “that we want to redress by doing justice to a world which, over the past ten years, has experienced deep anguish and new transformations. We present a snapshot of a part of our country whose rich facets are unknown.” The photo book, curated by Jean Back, exhibited photos of 16 amateur and professional photographers. “Liewen am Minett” was arguably the first social photography project in the region which was supposed to document the life in the region during the steel crisis, particularly the life and landscapes that would soon no longer be found. A reader’s letter, published in Tageblatt, complained that the photographers had looked only for the ugly sides of the Minett and that the photos did not really represent the Minett and its inhabitants. This sparked a public debate about the identity of the region and its inhabitants. Some 35 years later, researcher Viktoria Boretska has revisited this project and talked to some of the protagonists but also with younger photographers that still document the region in transformation. The film is part of the “Remixing Industrial Pasts in the Digital Age” project of the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History. The research project is funded by Esch2022 European Capital of Culture.

Wir präsentieren eine Momentaufnahme eines Teils unseres Landes, dessen reiche Facetten unbekannt sind.“ Das von Jean Back kuratierte Fotobuch zeigte Fotos von 16 Amateur- und Profifotografen. „Liewen am Minett“ war wohl das erste offizielle Projekt der Sozialfotografie, die das Leben in der Region während der Stahlkrise dokumentieren sollte, insbesondere das Leben und die Landschaften, die bald nicht mehr zu finden wären. Ein im Tageblatt veröffentlichter Leserbrief beklagte, dass die Fotografen wohl nur nach den hässlichen Seiten des Minett gesucht hätten und dass die Fotos das Minett und seine Bewohner nicht wirklich repräsentierten. Dies löste eine öffentliche Debatte über die Identität der Region und ihrer Bewohner aus. Rund 35 Jahre später hat die Forscherin Viktoria Boretska dieses Projekt wieder hervorgeholt und mit einigen der Protagonisten, aber auch mit jüngeren Fotografen gesprochen, die noch immer die Region im Wandel dokumentieren. Der Film ist Teil des Projekts „Remixing Industrial Pasts in the Digital Age“ des Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History. Das Forschungsprojekt wird gefördert durch die Europäische Kulturhauptstadt Esch2022.

"Liewen am Minett" est probablement le premier projet officiel de photographie sociale, destiné à documenter la vie dans la région pendant la crise de l'acier, en particulier la vie et les paysages qu'on ne retrouvera bientôt plus. Une lettre à l'éditeur publiée dans le Tageblatt se plaignait que les photographes ne cherchaient probablement que le côté laid du Minett et que les photos ne représentaient pas vraiment le Minett et ses habitants. Cela a déclenché un débat public sur l'identité de la région et de ses habitants. Environ 35 ans plus tard, la chercheuse Viktoria Boretska a repris ce projet et s'est entretenue avec certains des protagonistes, mais aussi avec des jeunes photographes qui documentent toujours la région en mutation. Le film fait partie du projet du Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History « Remixing Industrial Pasts in the Digital Age ». Le projet de recherche est financé par la Capitale européenne de la culture Esch2022.
