In the spring of 2022, Nuit de la Culture, Kulturfabrik and the HistorEsch team of the University of Luxembourg are collaborating with the Portuguese artist Mariana Duarte Santos to create a new artwork in the district Lallange of the city Esch-sur-Alzette.
The general objective of the HistorEsch projects is to enhance participation in a qualitative way through collaboration with local partners and to create a way where citizen historians can contribute to the production of historical narratives. The ArtistEsch mural project aims to engage the public in the history of the neighborhood through an art-based approach.
Art is a means of conveying meaning beyond the ratio, as it is able to convey the emotions and atmosphere that is often lacking in the presentation of historical research. The process of dialogue between the artist and the community offers the possibility of moving beyond the academic rigidity of the historical discipline. Through the art-based approach, the emotions attached to the past can be visualized and their meaning conveyed to the general public.
From the beginning, the HistorEsch team agreed that artist-community interaction would be central to this approach, which would be established through a local cultural partner. The goal is to explore the broadest possible extent to which participation could take place in this process: from its pre-conception phase to the creation of the mural. The proposal of historical subjects and images is community-driven, which aims to inspire the artist to create a design based on the local perception of its history.
During the pre-conception phase, old photographs were requested on the Facebook page Fl’ESCH Back and three evenings were organized during which residents could meet and interact with the artist Mariana Duarte Santos. The first evening was a walking tour through the neighborhood, during which the residents guided the artist to significant places and shared their knowledge.
The next evening, Mariana met with the citizen historians of the HistorEsch project. Jointly, they vocalized five themes that were most important to them to describe the evolution of their neighborhood. A recurring topic was the change of the neighborhood from a natural environment to a residential area (from nature to concrete, rural to urban). On the third night, a creative community meeting was organized during which the general public came to meet Mariana and share their memories and ideas.
Inspired by the submitted pictures and the stories of the residents, Mariana Duarte Santos created six sketches. At the end of March, residents of the neighborhood were asked to vote for their favorite design. This design will be painted on the wall between 4-12 May, and the fresco will be officially inaugurated on 13 May 2022 with a public celebration starting at 17.30 at 12 Cité Dr. Nicolas Schaeftgen.

Vun Ufank un war d’HistorEsch Ekipp sech eens, dass d’Interaktioun tëscht der Kënschtlerin an der Communautéit eng zentral Approche wier, déi duerch d’Zesummenaarbecht mat lokalen Kulturpartner etabléiert géing ginn. D’Zil war et, dat gréisst méiglecht Ausmooss den Participatioun an dësem Prozess ka spillen, rauszefannen: vun de Virbereedungen bis hin zur Gestaltung vun der Fresque. Insgesamt goufen dräi Owenter organiséiert, op deenen d’Awunner d’Kënschtlerin Mariana Duarte Santos treffe a mat hir interagéiere konnten. Den éischten Owend war ee Spadséiergang duerch de Quartier, bei dem d’Awunner d’Kënschtlerin op wichteg Plaze guidéiert hunn an hiert Wësse gedeelt hunn.
Um nächsten Owend huet d’Mariana d’Historiker vum HistorEsch Projet getraff. Zesummen hu si fënnef Theme rausgesicht, déi de Bierger am wichtegste waren wann et drëms gaangen ass, d’Evolutioun vum Quartier ze beschreiwen. Een Thema dat ëmmer rëm komm ass war dat vun engem Quartier an dem d’Natur verschwonnen ass an den ëmmer méi bewunnt ginn ass. Um drëtten Owend gouf ee kreatiivt Treffen tëscht der Kënschtlerin an dem Public organiséiert wou d’Léit hir Iddien an Erënnerungen mam Mariana deele konnten.
Inspiréiert duerch déi ville Fotoen a Geschichte vun den Awunner huet d’Mariana Duarte Santos sechs verschidde Iddien gesketched. Enn Mäerz goufen d’Awunner aus dem Quartier gefrot fir hire Favorit ze stëmmen. Dësen Design wäert tëscht dem 4. An dem 12. Mee op d’Mauer gemoolt ginn. Déi offiziell Aweiung ass den 13. Mee 2022 ab 17.30 Auer mat enger ëffentlecher Feier op der Hausnummer 12 an der Cité Dr. Nicolas Schaeftgen.
