In Italian, the adjective giusto (‘right’) has performed the discourse function of response marker since at least 1613 (DELI 2008: 671). In this paper, I argue that the adjective has recently undertaken a new process of discoursivization, defined as the diachronic process that ends in discourse (Ocampo 2006: 317). In particular, I maintain that giusto may also serve the function of invariant tag (Andersen 2001), a linguistic item appended to a statement for the purpose of seeking mutual agreement, verification or corroboration of a claim (Millar and Brown 1979).

The edited book ‘Jews or Germans?’ seeks to explore the post-war expulsion of the German minority, which did not involve only Nazi adherents and ideologists. To a certain extent, the entire process of displacement should not be apprehended solely from national or ethnic perspectives with clearly defined categories. In this sense, the project aims to problematize the established view of Jewish emigration history.

This study proposes an experimental method to trace the historical evolution of media discourse as a means to investigate the construction of collective meaning. Based on distributional semantics theory (Harris, 1954; Firth, 1957) and critical discourse theory (Wodak and Fairclough, 1997), it explores the value of merging two techniques widely employed to investigate language and meaning in two separate fields: neural word embeddings (computational linguistics) and the discourse-historical approach (DHA; Reisigl and Wodak, 2001) (applied linguistics).

The strategic use of the so-called new media has become more and more central to the way in which politicians, especially populist exponents, reach out to their audiences. Perhaps due to their immediate and widespread resonance, social media platforms have proven to be particularly well-suited to the way populist messages are shaped. Their impact seems to be highly effective even beyond the geographical and cultural borders of the audience the messages are originally conceived for.

Seit nunmehr 100 Jahren ist das heutige Ostbelgien Teil des Belgischen Königreichs. Diesen Jahrestag haben die beiden Historiker Christoph Brüll und Andreas Fickers zum Anlass genommen, gemeinsam mit dem BRF in 8 Radioessays in die ostbelgische Vergangenheit hineinzuhorchen. Die bislang kaum erforschten Tonarchive des BRF haben sich als herausragende Quelle erwiesen, um Zwischentöne hörbar zu machen und so Stimmen und Stimmungen aus der bewegten ostbelgischen Vergangenheit wieder zu beleben.

The importance of smaller financial centres in international capitalism has recently been highlighted by a number of ‘leaks’. Yet such public attention stands in contrast to the paucity of historiographical research on these relatively new centres. To this regard, Luxembourg provides an interesting case study. While identified as a ‘global specialist’ by the Global Financial Centres Index, the genealogy of how it came to achieve this status remains largely under-researched.
