Luxembourg has celebrated its sovereign’s birthday since the 18th century. When Grand Duchess Charlotte (23 January 1896–9 July 1985) ascended the throne in 1919, the date for these birthday celebrations became 23 January, and this date was declared a national holiday in 1947. But on 23 December 1961, a Grand Ducal Decree set the date of 23 June as Luxembourg’s National Day, when the country would officially celebrate the monarch’s birthday.

Seit 1973 verfügen die deutschsprachigen Belgier über ihre eigene parlamentarische Versammlung. Wahlkämpfe in der deutschen Kulturgemeinschaft wurden so zu zentralen Momenten der politischen Auseinandersetzung und des Parteienstreits. In dieser Folge von „100 Jahre Ostbelgien“ wollen Andreas Fickers und Christoph Brüll diese Wahlkämpfe auf der Grundlage von Wahldebatten beleuchten, die der BHF/BRF in den Jahren 1974 bis 1999 ausgestrahlt hat.

Mit der Zahl der Infizierten in Europa stieg in den letzten Monaten auch die Zahl der Grundrechte, die für eine gewisse Zeit nicht mehr galten. Die in den Verfassungen verbrieften Freiheitsrechte stehen den Schutzmaßnahmen gegenüber, die Leben schützen sollen.

This workshop gathering 10 participants focused on finding the root cause for the need and purpose for multistakeholder cooperation between social scientists and civil society.

The Schengen Area is one of the pillars of the European project. But it has been affected by several difficulties: the serious consequences of the global economic and financial crisis (2008-2018), growing concerns over external migratory pressure and the question of enlargement, fears of social dumping and, since March 2020, the COVID-19 crisis. Identifying these obstacles is vital so that pragmatic solutions can be found without jeopardising the founding principle.

This article seeks to identify the factors that have led researchers to root their historical approach in a national or regional context, rather than a global one. This may seem paradoxical when the Internet is thought to be global, and digital content and cultures at least partially cross-borders. These approaches are determined by reactions to a history of the Internet that has been far too focused on the United States from the outset, by a desire to consider this history in a given context, and by the historical sources.

The five papers of this special issue were candidates for the first Internet Histories Early Career Researcher Award. They represent the next generation of scholarship and show creative, original approaches to the study of internet history. These papers all help enrich our perspectives and broaden them in many ways, from Brazil to China, from Cyberactivitst to Civil Society at large, from Gender Studies to Platform Studies, from Emails to Interfaces, while demonstrating again that there is no unique path to write “Internet Histories.”
