Despite research history spanning more than a century, settlement patterns still hold a promise to contribute to the theories of large-scale processes in human history. Mostly they have been presented as passive imprints of past human activities and spatial interactions they shape have not been studied as the driving force of historical processes. While archaeological knowledge has been used to construct geographical theories of evolution of settlement there still exist gaps in this knowledge.

In 1997, the Luxembourgish steel company ARBED extinguished the last of its three traditional blast furnaces built between 1965 and 1979 at its production site in Belval, now solely focusing on recycling scrap metal. This marked a milestone in the restructuring of the Luxembourgish steel industry which experienced a far-reaching transformation from mass steel producer and largest employer of the country to a local producer of highly specialized products with a small number of skilled workers beginning in the mid-1970s.

The history of European integration and Europeanisation has developed into a varied field that has moved on from an initial focus on the vision and achievements of the founding fathers. However, even though women played a vital part in the European project launched after the Second World War, their role has yet to be fully explored.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 triggered a worldwide wave of support and solidarity, also with C²DH, where our staff agreed that the centre should be strongly committed to supporting Ukrainian researchers. Over time, three intertwined focus areas of activities emerged: efforts to foster cooperation between the Ukrainian research community and the C²DH, efforts to offer future-oriented training for Ukrainian researchers and students, and efforts to document the war, preserve Ukrainian cultural heritage and create opportunities for future research activities.

The digital turn is having a major impact on geopolitics in terms of power, governance and regulation, leading to a proliferation of stakeholders and networks at multiple levels, new dynamics of competition, and novel ways of working. Digital technologies have also brought about a paradigm shift in information and communication systems, with the emergence of new media that will have a long-term impact on individual and collective democracy.

Newspapers count among the most attractive sources for historical research. Following mass digitisation efforts over the past decades, researchers now face the problem of overabundance of materials which can no longer be managed with keyword search and basic content filtering techniques alone even though only a fraction of the overall archival record has actually been made available. This poses challenges for the contextualisation and critical assessment of these sources which can be effectively addressed using semantic enrichments based on natural language processing techniques.

After the Second World War, as Luxembourg abandoned its neutrality and engaged in international multilateralism and European integration, it adopted a new foreign policy that for many years remained exclusively male-dominated. The recruitment of the first female diplomat in 1973 was preceded by the emergence of Luxembourg’s first female politicians in international relations as elected members of parliament or ministers/members of the government.

Presentation for the ZZF PhD colloquium of my current (new) book project which explores the history and genealogies of digital history, set within the broader context of the ways in which technology has shaped historical research practices and knowledge production since the late 19th century. The aim is to investigate the intellectual underpinnings of the field we now call digital history by attending to the longue durée of the human-machine encounter in historical research.
